Vashon Island, Washington

Vashon Island, located in the southern half of Washington’s bustling Puget Sound, is referred to by locals as the “Heart of the Sound.” Also known as Vashon Maury Island, it comprises two islands that are linked together by a paved road.

With two ferry terminals, one at the northern tip of the island and one at its south, Vashon Island is an easy 15-minute ferry ride from either Seattle or Tacoma. The ferry ride also provides a breathtaking means for seeing some of Puget Sound’s most exquisite scenery.

Farmers and fruit growers may have founded this small island in the 1800s, but today it is Vashon Island’s quaint rural charm and appealing mixture of artists, writers and entrepreneurs that give it a distinctive character. Small communities are dotted across the island, linked by a two-lane road and a smattering of small farms, parks and independent businesses along the way. Visitors can spend part of a day investigating Vashon Island’s downtown center, or roam through the island’s various small enclaves.

Vashon Island’s Strawberry Festival is legendary and highly attended each July. Art displays, specialty foods, music and a grand parade are part of the festivities.

Recreational activities are as varied as the scenic attractions on the island: Kayaking, horseback riding, and bicycling are just a few of the key activities on and around this 37-square-mile island.

Well-appointed bed and breakfast inns, vacation rentals and camping can all be found on the island. Vashon Island’s character bed and breakfast inns make ideal getaway destinations, and many of the inns and vacation rentals are situated on acreage, offering relaxing settings for country walks. Camping facilities also include economy private rooms and shared accommodations.

The island’s dining choices are wide ranging, and include vegetarian, Mexican, bistro and fine dining specializing in local specialties.
