Idaho’s 18 alpine ski areas span the entire state. With more than 15,000 acres of ski/snowboarding terrain, finding a great place to enjoy Idaho’s champagne powder and spectacular mountain ranges isn’t hard. Legendary ski resorts like Sun Valley and Silver Mountain, whose ski slopes have virtually put Idaho on the map, have helped newer resorts gain name recognition. Sun Valley, at the center of the state, was once the favorite of celebrities, including Bing Crosby and Clark Gable. Its expansive facilities, however, are what have kept this 70-plus year-old resort at the top of the charts. With 21 different lifts, Sun Valley is able to transport more skiers per hour than any other ski area, averaging 3,000 visitors a day on its 75 different runs. Located some 45 miles from the state’s northwest border, Silver Mountain enjoys the benefits of two mountain peaks, both of which tower more than 6,000 feet in elevation. The resort divides its runs up between four experience levels; 70 percent of terrain is dedicated to mid-range intermediate and advanced skiers. One of Idaho’s newest ski areas, Tamarack Resort, near Donnelly, boasts 840 skiable acres, with a 400-foot super pipe and three high-speed quads. Other ski areas sprinkled across the state include central Idaho’s Soldier Mountain, which offers 36 runs and a snowcat ski service; and Grand Targhee Resort, in the Grand Tetons, with 2,400 vertical feet and 500 inches of snow a year. Many of the ski areas have accommodations and dining facilities on site. Idaho’s 46 different Nordic ski areas and 7,200 miles of snowmobile trails attest to the fact that Idaho isn’t just for alpine skiers. Idaho Parks and Recreation maintains 29 regional grooming programs to ensure that its public lands stay open when winter conditions are at their best. |
